Story

Habana in the '50s

The 1956 issue of Cabaret Quarterly describes Habana as “a mistress of pleasure, the lush and opulent goddess of delights”. In the ‘50s Habana was an international city; it had a glamorous sensuality which seduced the jet set: Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Gary Cooper, Marlon Brando, John Wayne, Walt Disney and, most of all, Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway spent 22 years living in Habana and he was considered by locals as a “real Cuban”, calling him “Ernesto” or “Papa”. In turn, he donated his own Nobel Prize for literature to the Cuban people and made the Daiquiri one of the most famous drinks in the world. 60 years later, it is still impossible to visit Habana without falling in love with its wonderful mix of epicurean delights rainbow colours and untouched ‘50s appeal.
