Story

Lisbon in the '20s

Inspired by Lisbon’s avant-garde era, which began in the early 20th century, this period witnessed a cultural and artistic revolution. It marked a shift towards modernism. Lisbon aligned itself with broader European avant-garde movements such as Futurism, Surrealism, and Cubism. The Orpheu Literature movement led by Fernando Pessoa, Mário de Sá-Carneiro, and Almada Negreiros pushed the boundaries of languages transforming the usual writing and poetry, using constantly abstract and surreal images. It represented a bold departure from traditional norms, driven by a desire to break free from academic and classical art, characterized by a restless energy that fused bohemian café culture, literature, and art, gathering all the intellectuals at Lisbon’s cafés. This is the era of the creative rebels, where artists, poets, and dreamers broke the rules and transformed the streets into a living canvas of bold ideas and radical vibes.
